ANSYS is a suite of engineering simulation applications used for structural analysis, computational fluid dynamics, thermal simulation, electromagnetic analysis and product development. Its applications include ANSYS Mechanical, Fluent, Discovery, Electronics Desktop and other engineering tools.
Choosing a laptop for ANSYS requires careful consideration of the type of simulation being performed. Structural analysis and CFD simulations can require substantial processor performance and system memory, while GPU accelerated applications such as Discovery and certain Fluent solvers place greater demands on graphics hardware.
For professional engineering work, I recommend a modern Intel Core Ultra 9 or AMD Ryzen 9 processor, at least 32GB RAM, a dedicated NVIDIA RTX graphics card and a fast NVMe SSD. For large simulations, 64GB or 128GB RAM is a better choice.
The following laptops cover demanding engineering simulations, large computational models, GPU accelerated applications and more affordable engineering setups.
Best Overall Laptops for ANSYS

What to Look for When Choosing a Laptop for ANSYS
1. Processor Performance
The processor is a major consideration when running ANSYS simulations. Many structural and fluid simulation tasks benefit from multiple CPU cores, while some modelling and preprocessing operations can depend heavily on single core performance.
Look for a modern Intel Core Ultra 7 or Ultra 9 processor, or an AMD Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 9 processor.
For professional simulation work, prioritise:
• High sustained processor speeds.
• At least 8 high performance CPU cores for demanding work.
• Strong multicore performance.
• Effective thermal management.
• Sufficient processor cache and memory bandwidth.
A powerful processor is particularly useful for ANSYS Mechanical, Fluent and other CPU based simulation tasks.
2. RAM Capacity
RAM is one of the most important considerations when choosing a laptop for ANSYS. The amount required depends on the simulation type, mesh size, degrees of freedom and solver configuration.
Suggested memory configurations:
| Type of ANSYS work | Suggested RAM |
|---|---|
| Learning and basic simulations | 16GB |
| Small structural and thermal simulations | 32GB |
| Professional engineering simulations | 64GB |
| Large structural and CFD models | 96GB or 128GB |
| Extensive multiphysics and complex simulations | 128GB or higher |
ANSYS lists 8GB as a minimum installation requirement for its general Windows prerequisites. This should not be interpreted as sufficient memory for demanding simulations.
For professional engineering work, 64GB is a sensible target. If you regularly work with large CFD meshes or complex structural models, consider 128GB.
3. Graphics Card
The graphics card requirements vary considerably across ANSYS applications.
For ANSYS Mechanical, a dedicated GPU is useful for displaying and interacting with 3D models, meshes and simulation results. The graphics card does not automatically determine structural solver performance.
ANSYS Discovery has higher graphics requirements. Its 2026 R1 recommendations specify dedicated graphics hardware, with 8GB of dedicated video memory recommended for certain solver stages.
ANSYS Fluent also supports GPU accelerated solving with compatible NVIDIA and AMD graphics hardware, subject to solver, driver, operating system and licensing requirements.
Suggested laptop graphics configurations:
| Graphics card | Recommended application |
|---|---|
| RTX 4050 | Basic modelling and visualisation |
| RTX 4060 | Typical engineering simulation and display |
| RTX 4070 | Demanding visualisation and moderate GPU workloads |
| RTX 5070 or RTX 5070 Ti | Professional simulation and 3D applications |
| RTX 5080 | Demanding GPU accelerated applications |
| RTX 5090 | High performance GPU computing and demanding 3D work |
For GPU accelerated Fluent simulations, check the supported GPU architecture and CUDA requirements for your exact ANSYS release. Available GPU memory is also important because the simulation model and associated data must fit within the available memory.
